From Assen to Leiden

Let's continue with our trip back home from the circuit in Assen. We got into our car and soon realized the trip was not going to be neither short nor comfortable. Actually, it took 4 hours to get 50 km away from the circuit in that massive traffic jam! That is around 12 km/h!!

The funniest thing of the traffic jam was Dutch people. It must be some custome in the area but it is striking for non-Dutch: there were thousands of people besides the highway watching the traffic jam. Many natives were there with chairs, sunshades, barbecues... Children jumped into the cannals completely dressed (parents didn't care, of course)... And they were also occupying all the bridges over the highway, as they provided the best view of the traffic jam. Thanks to David and Marco for these photos!

After 4 hours and having advanced almost nothing, we decided to stop in a city called Zwolle. That city is not famous and I guess that will be the last time I go there. The city itself was a typical Dutch city, with cannals and Dutch houses, but there was something which made it nicer. Some photographs of this city come now.

The best thing in Zwolle was that we could find a nice Italian restaurant where we could relax and recover from the traffic jam. After around 2 hours there, the highway was not so full of cars and motorbikes any more and we could reach Leiden in 1.30 hours. We finally arrived at 11 pm, having started at 3.30 pm.

Finally, another piece of Dutch culture. Have a look at this inflatable man to advertise a restaurant. An awful white paper has been put to explain something in a quite inappropriate part of his body...

And have you seen the logo of the main advertisers in the circuit? Yes, A-style... The A is what you are really thinking about...

Dutch humour and aesthetics...
